Water source & treatment
North Bay's municipal system takes water from Trout Lake, while Parry Sound takes water from the Big Sound of Georgian Bay. These examples do not describe every community between them. A private lake intake or well has no municipal treatment plant upstream of the home. Its source, existing equipment and laboratory results must be assessed independently. The regional health unit provides private-water sampling guidance and collection locations, including Almaguin, North Bay, Parry Sound and West Nipissing.
What this means for your home
Identify whether your property has municipal water, a private well or a lake intake, then gather the matching report and sampling history. The local health unit recommends private-water bacterial testing in spring, summer and fall. Chemical testing and equipment choices depend on the property and concern. For seasonal cottages, include reopening, freeze protection, maintenance access and actual peak flow in the installation discussion rather than assuming a town supply represents the cottage.
